zahhak

Zahhak is a Stop-Motion commercial video for the comic book called “Zahhak.” Zahhak is one of the evilest figures in the Persian tales who ruled with the aid of demons. With a demon’s kiss, he had snakes growing from his shoulders, which fed with human brains for food every day.
As soon as he began his rule, the sun stopped shining, and everything became dark. He ruled for several centuries until he was finally defeated and captured by a hero who rose from the people.

behind the scene

Idea

In this project, we wanted to picture 3 ideas:
•First, using paper scraps to picture the idea, that the snake literally came to life from the papers of the book.
•Second, changing the lighting from black (hopeless times) to red (bloodshed), to picturing the cruelty of Zahhak.
•Third, Despite being a video, it still feels more like a comic book.
After the script was written, we made a simple 2D animation to have a clearer picture of what would come together as a stop-motion video.

Making

Since there were lots of paper scraps, it was quite challenging to move some of them, while some needed to remain untouched (like the background). So, we used our 3-level Stop-Motion Desk, (which we built from scratch), by using the last level for the background (black scraps), the second for the large shapes, and the first one for the details.
